Higher power LED technology is useful for applications where light needs to be visible at a great distance. These LEDs are specifically designed to withstand comparatively large amounts of input power. Smaller LEDs typically utilize just fractions of a watt. However, high power LED units can be rated for one watt, five watts or even ten watts. This may not seem like an especially large amount of energy. However, it is important to take into consideration that LEDs are highly efficient devices. A 60-watt incandescent bulb, for example, emits a great deal of waste heat along with the desired light output. A 60-watt LED emits extremely little heat and converts most of that input power to light. A 60-watt LED would have the potential to cause serious eye damage if viewed directly!
